At the heart of every successful organization is a group of dedicated individuals working diligently behind the scenes to make everything possible. Nowhere is this made clearer than within The Junior State of America, the nation’s largest student-run organization, with the Midwest State proud to be the home of some of JSA’s best leaders.

At Spring State, the third and final convention of each year, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are elected by delegates in attendance from all across the Midwest to lead their state for the following year. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor then review countless Cabinet Applications to appoint and direct a Cabinet focused on improving and expanding the Midwest State.

Below is the official 2016-2017 Midwest Cabinet filled with dedicated and talented individuals serving in the Executive, Convention, Debate, Publicity and Technology, Chapter Internal Affairs, Expansion, Fundraising,  and Activism departments. With an exciting year up ahead and an enthusiastic cabinet leading the way, the Midwest State is ready to soar to new heights!

Governors:

unnamedName: Janani Kalyan
Chapter:
District 204
Position:
Governor
Email:
jkalyan@jsa.org
Bio:
Janani joined JSA late her freshman year at the urging of various friends and upperclassmen mentors from the rogue/vogue District 204 chapter. Walking into her first convention, Spring State 2014, little did she know that this chapter, State, and organization would completely alter the way she perceived herself and the world around her. JSA has empowered Janani to be more civically responsible, forged some of her strongest and most widespread friendships, made her a better speaker, listener, leader, and statesman, and kept her up on many sleepless nights working to bring that same life-changing experience to other students.

Over the past three years, Janani’s love for JSA has soared through her experiences as a Midwest Debate Agent, the LtG’s Chief of Staff, and a D204 Executive Board member. Outside of JSA, Janani sings in various choirs, plays the classical Indian flute, participates in Science Olympiad, and serves on the Naperville City Council, amongst other things. Her skills include arranging photo shoots for her killer waffles, freestyling on her ukulele, and adhering to her elaborate to-do lists with all the stringency and rigidity of an overcooked spaghetti noodle.

This is Janani’s final year in JSA, and she is determined to make it a record-breaking one for the Midwest: Wider reach of chapters, more involved debates, increased convention opportunities, greater political activism. Janani is humbled to serve both a state and an organization she so strongly believes in; she can’t wait to make the Midwest its best as Governor next year.

Lieutenant Governor

Bio:
Hirsch is entering his fourth and final year at Vernon Hills High School. Through the Junior State, Hirsch has become a more effective leader, communicator, and statesman. With the unique opportunity to meet and debate delegates across the Midwest, Hirsch has learned to love JSA for its many facets. Hirsch’s personal connection with the roots of this organization have continued to mold over the past three years.  From Debate, Fundraising, and Publicity to late night discussions and long-lasting friendships, Hirsch finds it bittersweet to only have a single year to participate in JSA. These statesmen have served to provoke a more organized version of Hirsch, one that enjoys fostering long-winded conversations regarding politics, international relations, and the current election. Hirsch strives to make his last year in The Junior State unforgettable.

Anmol is a junior at Vernon Hills High School. When he joined JSA in his Freshman year, he saw it as a way to become more vocal and break out of his usually reserved personality. But once he joined, JSA wasn’t just a means to change his personality, it was something that he loved. This love only grew when he served as a debate agent last year. Aside from JSA, he is very involved in school, participating in clubs such as Academic Bowl, Math Team, and FBLA. He was also part of the Varsity Tennis Team for the past two years. Outside of school, he loves to develop iOS apps, read books, play tennis, and work on the business that he cofounded this summer. He hopes to use the skills that he gained through his extracurricular endeavors to involve himself in all aspects of JSA and improve it through collaboration and the use of technology.

Alhan’s biggest accomplishment is probably being able to rap to all of Childish Gambino’s song, Sweatpants, in addition to countless other Logic and G-Eazy jams. 100% Indian, Alhan can’t speak Hindi or Urdu without cringing at her accent. In her free time, she enjoys going to all the concerts. Literally all of the concerts. She is kind of obsessed with Snapchat and Netflix, but who isn’t. Cecilia is a sophomore at Vernon Hills High School. When she joined JSA a year ago, she never imagined how such a timid freshman would be able adapt to the intimidating atmosphere of the Midwest, nor was she sure how to embrace her chapter’s undeniably cult-like behavior. As a Debate Agent and her chapter’s Director of Activism, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to grow more involved in JSA this year. Outside of JSA, Cecilia is part of the Vernon Hills Academic Bowl team, her school’s band and orchestra, and the Midwest Young Artists’ Symphony Orchestra. In her free time, she can be found producing painfully high-pitched notes on her flute, trying to concoct culinary masterpieces (which nearly always turn out disastrously), reading classic literature, and roasting anyone who crosses her to a crisp. Cecilia is ready to elevate debate quality across the Midwest to never-before-seen heights, and in doing so, irrevocably prove that her department reigns supreme.

When little freshman Ravina Sachdev saw the poster for JSA in the back corner of the Brookfield Central High School Cafeteria, she was eager to attend the next meeting but had no idea that this club would change her whole entire life for the better. Having joined JSA in the middle of the year, Ravina only attended JSA 2016 Spring State but she was determined to become more involved in the organization. Shortly after, she was elected as the Director of Publicity and Recruitment of the BCHS JSA chapter, and has many ambitious goals for the Brookfield Central JSA chapter in the coming year. Ravina was also thrilled to be accepted to and attend the JSA summer school “NJ Institute on Leadership and Politics” held at Princeton University in August of 2016. Aside from JSA, Ravina is often found in her family room avidly watching CNN, MSNBC, and other national/political news channels, as she is dubbed as “the biggest political junkie”. She is often found on the tennis courts playing her heart out or in her kitchen constantly getting food from the pantry. Ravina Sachdev is ready to elevate debate quality across the Midwest to never-before-seen heights and in doing so, irrevocably prove that her department reigns supreme.

Maya is a junior in the rogue-vogue chapter of D204. Encouraged by friends who advised her that “the choir room maybe wasn’t the best place for a gun control debate”, Maya joined JSA her sophomore year and has loved it ever since. She adores the people, the passion, and the discussion and cannot wait to give back to this wonderful organization as a Debate Agent! When not gesturing wildly in JSA, Maya sings in the Young Naperville Singers as well as multiple school choirs, paints for her art commission business, and writes on just about everything. She likes piña coladas and getting caught in the rain as well as making obscure references in regular conversation. And, without a doubt, she wears the most outlandish earrings you have ever seen. Maya Benziger is ready to elevate debate quality across the Midwest to never-before-seen heights, and in doing so, irrevocably prove that her department reigns supreme.

Outside of JSA, Yulia is also part of FBLA, CSC, Math Team, and her school’s dance company Orchesis. Never deleting awful pictures of all JSAers, you better watch out for the amazing candids and awful captions that will come this year. Sen Kalidoss
Chapter:
Naperville North
Position:
Publicity Agent
Email:
skalidoss@midwest.jsa.org
Bio:
Much like any other freshman at the start of the school year, Sen scrambled to find extracurricular activities that would suit him, and was pretty much open to joining anything  remotely interesting at the time. So, it took nothing more than a short PA announcement to get him to join. He thought he would go in, debate, and do no more or no less. But boy, was he wrong. He was instantly hooked, and quickly became very involved in the JSA community at North. Sen ended up attending all three major conventions, and at each one found himself compulsively taking photos and videos of everything going on around him. It was this desire to document these events in such detail that got him elected to be Naperville North’s Director of Publicity for the 2016-2017 school year.
Aside from JSA, Sen has a variety of interests. You can find him putting in rivets (a riveting experience) or doing other mechanical things for the robotics team, serving it up at the school tennis courts, or on Scholastic Bowl. He also plays the piano, and volunteers as a tutor for various organizations. He has slight pyromaniacal tendencies, and is also an avid car and motorcycle fanatic, and drives both whenever he can. Among his favorite TV shows are House, Chuck, and Suits.
Sen is elated to be a Publicity Agent for Midwest Cabinet this year. He is eagerly waiting for the journey waiting for him, however long and hard it may be. He will do anything and everything in his power this year to help Midwest JSA be the best it has ever been!

He’s honored to serve as his chapter’s president and as the Midwest State’s Isolated and Collapsing Specialist, and he strives to keep the Midwest State healthy and growing.

He joined JSA at the start of his sophomore year and found a community of extraordinary teenagers whose passion for informed discussion and encouraging diverse opinions often exceeds that of actual politicians. As a member of the “JSA Diaspora” in Michigan, Max understands the unique challenges which chapters far from the Midwest’s center of gravity face. Having dealt with organizing transportation across state lines and keeping his peers motivated to attend events so far away, he knows how to engage and invigorate chapters in every corner of the Midwest.

He keeps busy outside of JSA through the Foreign Exchange Club, the Community Service Club, the Cooking Club, Skyline’s student government, Link Crew, and tutoring freshmen in history. In his free time, Max enjoys David Attenborough documentaries, yoga, and traveling abroad (ask about Turkey!). When you working hard, your money start expanding.” -21 Savage. This is the very essence of the mindset that Liam will have during his term as an Expansion Agent, except he will be working hard to make JSA chapters multiply as opposed to fiscal commodities. Liam joined JSA at the beginning of his Sophomore year, and is honored to serve the Junior State as an Expansion Agent this year. JSA was love at first sight for Liam, and slowly but surely he saw his week revolving around Thursday JSA meetings after school. Outside of JSA, Liam plays on the baseball team, local YMCA basketball team, a member of Science Olympiad, and a volunteer at Edward Hospital. When left to his own devices, Liam can be found lifting weights, screeching “Africa by Toto” at the top of his lungs, and applying nightly cream for his rosy cheeks. After hearing about it the second week of school and attending more meetings, he realized JSA was an exciting club. After attending conventions and having the honor to serve as a CIA Agent and Chief of Staff for the Midwest State, he realized JSA was a comforting and loving family and community. Now, as as he begins his fourth and final year in JSA, ready to take on his new role as National Director of Overseas Outreach, he has realized that JSA is a lifestyle that has become second nature to him.
